Dumpster Diving for Cigs at Work

I used to be a smoker, and when things got stressful at work, I would take a smoke break outside on the patio. One day last year, I decided that I was quitting tobacco. I went to the dumpster outside my office building and tossed in the pack of cigarettes.

Late in the afternoon, I started to get a nicotine craving, and I realized that I’d made a mistake. Normally, I would just go buy another pack, but I really did not want to spend another five bucks
since there was a perfectly good pack of cigarettes right outside my office in the dumpster.

The thing about the dumpster was it was five feet deep. It wasn’t like just reaching in a small trashcan. I would have had to jump in, which I was not going to do. I thought that my best option was to rig some kind of retrieval device.

I looked around my office for supplies and found some string, clear tape, and a stapler. First, I looped two pieces of clear tape (sticky side out) on the bottom of the stapler. Then, I tied a five foot long piece of string to the stapler.

Outside at the dumpster I made sure no one was watching and lowered the stapler in while holding onto the long piece of string. I landed the stapler on top of the pack of cigarettes, and the force of the landing made the tape on the bottom of the stapler stick to the pack. Then, I slowly began pulling the string and stapler out of the dumpster. It actually worked. I went over to the patio, sat down, and lit up.
